Fire PoliceThe Maywood Fire Police was established in May 1926 as an active unit within the Maywood Fire Department.
Our Mission is to respond to all incidents requiring fire department apparatus and personnel. We first respond to the major intersections within the borough to assure safe passage of the emergency apparatus. We then respond to the scene of the incident to reroute traffic and insure that persons in the area are safe during the fire department operations. Only after all apparatus has left the incident scene are our duties complete.
In addition, we respond to other emergencies such as power outages at traffic lights, downed power lines, street flooding, local community events, or whenever requested by the police department.
The organization also conducts monthly training drills in conjunction with the Maywood Fire Department.
All personnel are equipped with the proper safety clothing and equipment. They must be 18 years old, possess a valid driver's license, have access to a motor vehicle, and are required to attend a 18 hour fire police training course conducted by the Bergen County Police, Fire, and EMS Academy.
If you are interested in joining please contact Captain Tom Stavola at 201-873-7474.
Junior MembershipThe Junior Firefighter program came into existence after the civil defense program was disbanded in the mid 1970's. Over the years the program has been an excellent source of recruitment for full department membership once the individual attains his or her 18th birthday.
The Junior Firefighter Program requirements are as follows:
- Maywood resident age 16 through 18
- Be in good overall physical health
- Possess a positive attitude
- Willingness to learn and take direction
Upon acceptance into the program, all Junior firefighters are issued a complete set of firefighting gear along with a pager system that they can carry with them at all times. All Junior firefighters respond to calls the same way other firefighters respond, and in turn perform many important tasks on the fireground.
Safety is rule #1 within the Maywood Fire Department and under no circumstances would any Junior member ever be put in a situation that jeopardized that individuals overall health or well being. All junior members operating on the fireground do so within a limited and supervised environment at all times. There are no exceptions to this rule.
All Junior firefighters are also welcome and encouraged to attend all company and Departmental level meetings, drills, parades and Departmental special functions.
You will also have the opportunity to attend several fire training classes at the Mahwah fire training facility. These classes comprise part of the curriculum for Firefighter I training. Firefighter I training is required of all individuals who desire to become full members of the Maywood Fire Department.
Junior firefighting members are rotated every three months between the three different companies that comprise the Maywood Fire Department. In this way it is assured that all individuals within the program derive a complete learning experience and have better opportunities to work with all the members that make up the Department.
